A Restricted Duct Is Both an Efficiency Problem and a Fire Risk
A dryer works by pushing hot, moist air out of the house. Everything about its performance depends on that air actually leaving. Lint accumulates along the duct run, the opening narrows, and the appliance ends up working harder to move less air.
You notice the efficiency half first. Loads that used to take one cycle take two, the laundry room runs warm and humid, and the appliance is hot to the touch. Each of those is the same underlying problem showing up in a different way.
The half you do not notice is that lint is extremely combustible, and a restricted duct makes a dryer run hotter than it was designed to. Clothes dryers are a recognised source of residential fires and lint buildup in the ducting is the usual contributing factor. Most people book this for the drying time. It is worth doing for the other reason.

How long the duct is, how many bends it has, and what condition the exterior hood and flap are in. A flap that no longer opens is its own problem and often the reason a bird got in.
Clear the Duct
Lint is removed along the length of the run rather than pulled from the ends, which is the difference between clearing a duct and relocating a blockage further into it.
Clear the Vent Hood
The hood and flap are cleared and checked so they open freely under airflow. A clean duct behind a stuck flap is still a restricted system.
Confirm Airflow

How do I know mine needs doing?
The reliable signs are all about airflow. Loads that used to dry in one cycle now need two. The dryer or the laundry room is noticeably hotter than it used to be. Lint is visible around the exterior vent hood, or the hood flap no longer opens properly when the dryer runs. Any of those means the duct is restricted, and the restriction is almost always lint.
Why does this matter beyond the drying time?

Regularly, and birds are the most common. A vent hood with a failed or missing flap is an inviting cavity, and a nest in a duct blocks it completely.
